The Wonders & Perils of Spring Bird Migration in NY with Lights Out CNY

The Wonders & Perils of Spring Bird Migration in NY with Lights Out CNY In-Person

It's peak spring bird migration!

This presentation from Lights Out Central New York will explore the incredible journeys that migratory birds make to Central New York every spring. Attendees will learn what kinds of BIRDS migrate through our region. Where are they going? Why do they FLY so far, and how does the SPRINGTIME eruption of insects, pollen, and sap affect the timing of MIGRATION?

Woven into this narrative will be a conservation message about some perils that migration birds face in migration and the simple steps we can take at home and at work to help migrating birds reach their destinations safely.

Meredith Barges is a bird-friendly building researcher and chair of Lights Out Central New York. She helps people to appreciate the complex lives of birds and how our decisions about buildings, landscaping, and nighttime lighting affect bird populations.

Lights Out Central New York was created in October 2024 by the Onondaga Audubon Society in response to the urgent need to protect millions of migratory birds that rest and nest in Central New York during peak migration. The nonprofit works across the Central New York region to reduce the danger of unnecessary artificial nighttime lighting for migratory birds through advocacy and public education.
